Inside My Debut Solo Art Exhibition: What's the Matter

Bringing a full body of work to life is always a deeply personal journey, but sharing it with the world for the very first time changes you completely as an artist. My debut solo exhibition, "What’s the Matter," opened its doors at WORLDART Gallery on Long Street in Cape Town. Following an incredible reception during First Thursdays, the collection was extended and moved down to Youngblood Africa on Bree Street.

As a winner of the WORLDART10 competition, this exhibition was a massive milestone for my creative practice. It was the first time I could truly introduce collectors and interior designers to my intense, physical exploration of fluid movement, material chemistry, and deep emotion.

The title, "What’s the Matter," plays on two ideas: the actual physical properties of the materials I work with every day in my studio, and the underlying thoughts and feelings that shape our human experiences. By pouring pure pigments and liquid epoxy resin in multiple separate, glass-like layers, I build a glossy, crystal-clear surface that traps light and looks three-dimensional. To bridge the gap between the artwork and your architecture, I finish each piece with custom-crafted, floating mirror acrylic frames that catch the ambient room colors, helping massive statement pieces settle beautifully into a wall.

While specific standalone pieces from my collections are made available through curated gallery selections, commissioning a custom piece directly from my studio is the best way to get a painting tailored perfectly to your space.

By pouring pure pigments and liquid epoxy resin in multiple separate, glass-like layers, I create active signature series like Fluid Grid and Resonance. These dimensional panels do not look static on a wall; their highly reflective surfaces change in depth, highlights, and color tones depending on the time of day and where you stand in the room.

To bridge the gap between the artwork and your architecture, I finish each piece with custom-crafted, floating mirror acrylic frames. These signature frames reflect the surrounding lighting, wall textures, and metallic accents, allowing large-scale 100x100cm panels to blend seamlessly into modern, minimalist, or industrial spaces without the heavy look of traditional frames.
